'M' class stars (more commonly known as 'red dwarfs') are the most common variety out there, accounting for about 65-70% of the total. (Most are very faint, around 1-2% of our sun's luminosity, but that's another matter). 'M' stars are also the longest lived stars out there. How long? Put it to you this way: despite the universe being something on the order of 13 billion years old, no M star has yet perished of 'old age.' Estimated life span is on the order of 100 billion years.
