The last data I read (and this was a year ago, and I need to back it up by doing some tracking down of numbers and giving my source) was that women in Oregon stay on welfare for a year or less--in fact, in Oregon women can't collect welfare after their infant is over a year of age. They are required to look for work, attend job training, if they want to continue getting welfare (basically a subsidy for the child only) and food stamps. If offerred a job they must take it. Ever noticed how many women work in fast food, and that many of them are managers? If they don't comply then they are cut off. Why would anyone CHOOSE to try and live off of $250.00 a month and @ the same in food stamps?

No, we don't have lazy welfare mothers. Not in this state. The welfare is such a paltry amount that these women can barely get by with it! I don't know how men can get on welfare without being 'disabled'--perhaps food stamps are available to them if they have a family. Things have changed A LOT with the cuts in domestic spending from the time of the Regan/Bush era.
